A Longer Engagement

(And why it might be the best decision you make!)

When you get engaged, it’s so easy to feel like you need to jump straight into planning and lock in a date ASAP.

But here’s something I tell my couples all the time…

A longer engagement can make your entire wedding experience so much better.

If you’re deciding on timing, here are a few reasons you might want to give yourself more space.

1. You Can Spread Out Your Budget (and Breathe a Little)

Planning a wedding quickly often means paying for everything all at once… and that adds up fast.

With a longer engagement, you can:

  • Space out deposits and payments

  • Be more intentional with where your money goes

  • Actually enjoy the process without constant financial stress

And honestly? That breathing room makes a huge difference.

2. You Have a Better Chance at Booking Your Dream Vendors

The vendors you’ve been stalking on Instagram? Yeah… everyone else loves them too.

Most of the best vendors book out well over a year in advance. When your timeline is short, you’re often choosing from who’s left instead of who you really want.

More time means:

  • More availability

  • More options

  • A team you’re genuinely excited about

3. Planning Feels Way Less Overwhelming

Trying to plan a wedding in a short window while juggling real life is… a lot.

A longer engagement lets you:

  • Take things one step at a time

  • Make decisions without pressure

  • Actually enjoy planning instead of just getting through it

It turns the whole experience from stressful to manageable.

4. You Get to Be More Intentional With Your Choices

When you’re rushed, it’s easy to make quick decisions just to check things off the list.

But when you have time, you can:

  • Think through what really matters to you

  • Make choices that feel like you

  • Create a day that’s personal, not just pretty

And that’s where the magic really is.

5. You Actually Get to Enjoy Being Engaged

This season of life is so special, and it goes by fast.

A longer engagement gives you space to:

  • Celebrate without feeling rushed

  • soak it all in (because it really does fly by)

  • enjoy things like engagement photos, showers, and all the in-between moments

It’s not just about the wedding day. It’s about the whole experience leading up to it.

Final Thoughts

There’s no one-size-fits-all timeline. Short engagements can absolutely work.

But if you have the option to give yourself more time…

it can make everything feel easier, more intentional, and a whole lot more fun.

If you’re in the middle of planning and trying to decide what timeline feels right, I’d love to help you think through it.

As a wedding photographer, I’ve seen firsthand how different timelines impact the entire experience, and I’m always here to help my couples create a day that feels easy, intentional, and actually fun.

If you’re looking for a photographer who’s not just there to take photos, but to help guide you through the process…
