How to Dress For Your Engagement Session
Choosing what to wear for your engagement session can feel surprisingly overwhelming.
You want to look like yourself… but also a little elevated. You want your photos to feel natural, but still beautiful enough to frame in your home for years to come.
After photographing so many engagement sessions, I can tell you this:
what you wear truly does make a difference—not just in how your photos look, but in how you feel during them.
So let’s make this simple.
Choose Outfits That Feel Like You
The best engagement photos happen when you feel comfortable and confident.
If you’re constantly adjusting your outfit, worrying about how something fits, or wearing something that doesn’t feel like you, it will show.
Instead, choose pieces that:
you feel good in
you can move naturally in
reflect your everyday style (just slightly elevated)
Choose Light, Soft Colors That Photograph Beautifully
This is one of the biggest things that makes a difference in your photos.
Light, soft colors photograph in a way that feels:
romantic
airy
natural
Colors like:
soft blush
sage green
light blue and gray
creams and neutrals
These tones reflect light beautifully and create that soft, glowing look so many couples love.
Darker colors, on the other hand, can add a visual “heaviness” to your photos. They tend to absorb light rather than reflect it, which can make images feel more serious or less dimensional, especially in outdoor settings.
That doesn’t mean you can’t wear darker tones, but if your goal is light, romantic, and natural images, lighter colors will always work in your favor. Pick a darker color as an accent and not a main contributor.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
You don’t need to show up in identical outfits (and honestly, it’s better if you don’t).
Instead, aim for colors that complement each other.
For example:
one person in a soft floral or texture
the other in a solid neutral that ties it together
This creates visual interest while still feeling cohesive.
Flowy Dresses + Movement Make a Difference
If you’re considering a dress, this is your sign.
Flowy dresses photograph beautifully because they:
add movement
create softness
catch light in a really natural way
And movement is what brings photos to life.
Whether it’s a slight breeze or just walking together, that flow adds a romantic, effortless feel that’s hard to replicate with more structured outfits.
Think About Your Location
Your outfits should feel like they belong in the setting you’ve chosen.
A few examples:
A field or garden → soft, romantic, flowy
Downtown → a bit more structured or modern
Winery or venue → elevated and polished
When your outfits match the environment, everything feels more cohesive and intentional.
Plan for Two Outfits
If your session allows for it, bringing two outfits is a great option.
I usually recommend:
one more casual look
one slightly more dressed up
This gives you variety in your final gallery without overcomplicating things.
What to Avoid
A few things that don’t tend to photograph as well:
large logos or graphics
neon colors
busy, high-contrast patterns
anything that feels tight, stiff, or uncomfortable
If you’re unsure about something, I’m always happy to help you decide.
You Don’t Have to Figure This Out Alone
One of the biggest things my couples say after their session is how helpful it was to have guidance beforehand.
You don’t have to guess what will look good because I’m here to help you choose outfits that photograph beautifully and feel like you.
Because at the end of the day, the goal isn’t just photos that look good…
It’s photos that feel like you.
